Canada's Environmental Future:  A Horizon Scan of Environmental Issues for the Coming Decades

We are currently preparing the programme for our fifth McGill Symposium on Environmental Research. This year’s focus will be a unique look at environmental issues affecting Canada in the coming decades and our capacity to respond to them. The conference will highlight diverse expertise by cutting-edge researchers at McGill and other Canadian universities, who will present their predictions and scenarios for the future.  Using horizon-scanning techniques, they will draw upon available evidence and current trends to identify foreseeable threats, opportunities or crises that are likely to emerge over the next 10 to 20 years.  Topics may include the problem of synergistic environmental stressors, emerging diseases, deforestation, fisheries decline, rapid climate change in the north, and the consequences of expanding land use and urbanization.
